We know that the many experiences that Israel went through are symbolic of the Christian walk today. It is amazing to see that God can demonstrate this with such accurate parallels through an entire nation. This also indicates the importance that we learn from these lessons.

In Joshua 3:13–17, the priests, as commanded by God, stepped into the Jordan, the river stopped flowing, and Israel crossed the Jordan. How many of us today are standing on the bank of the Jordan afraid or unwilling to get our feet wet? And what does the analogy of “getting our feet wet” mean?
To get one’s feet wet means to step out in faith. It is an act of faith and an act of surrender.

In order to cross that Jordan we all face, we need to know who we are in Jesus. We must know His word. We must know the nature of the devil’s lies. We must have the desire and determination that comes with that warrior mentality. In the book of Joshua we see that God spoke to Joshua on several occasions and decreed strength and courage to him. Since this is written in the Bible for our benefit, God is decreeing this to us as well.

Proverbs 29:18 says that without a vision the people perish. We need that vision. Who are we in Jesus Christ? What are our rights, privileges, and responsibilities? What is this Promised land? How do we get there?

The Promised Land - The best place in the Bible to see what the Promised land for a Christian is to be, is found in the book of Acts. Here we see the early church. We see miracles, signs and wonders, healings and salvation coming to multitudes. We can infer from these things that the Christians of that day had a relationship with Jesus that went far beyond what we experience today. Before going any further it must be emphasized that all of this Promised land and all it means is based upon and dependent upon one’s relationship with Jesus. Amen!? That relationship is more important than anything. The Apostle Paul illustrates this quite vividly in Philippians 3:8.

Php 3:8 "Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ"

And in 1Corinthians 2:4, Paul writes:

1Cor 2:4-5 "and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God."

This is supposed to be the normal Christian life. We are supposed to think and operate in the supernatural. Amen!? The carnal mind can’t comprehend these things. The carnal mind tries to rationalize according to what is seen rather than act out of faith based on the Word of God. God said it—that settles it! Amen!? If you examine yourself, you will find that you are drawn to the supernatural. We as Christians have an inherent desire to pursue the supernatural things of God. This is where we belong. It is the carnal mind that learns unbelief. It is the carnal mind that refuses to cross the Jordan. It is the carnal mind that listens to the lies of the devil.

Romans 12:2 says, "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God".

Part of our responsibilities on this earth is to prove what is good, acceptable and perfect will of God. Proving this is to do so by deed and not word only. Like Brandon, we are to be ready in any circumstance to demonstrate God’s power to people and thus fulfill the great commission. .

The question now is, how do we get there? The task is not as daunting as it may seem. God is no respecter of persons. If you want such an anointing, you can have it. Period! All you need to do is go after it. In the process of doing this there are some important lessons we need to learn. First off, we need to know who we are as Christians.

Who Are We? Remember, God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Heaven and earth will pass away but Jesus’ words will never pass away. In the book of Genesis 1:28 we find God’s original commission to mankind.

Gen 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

God spoke this to Adam and Eve and hence to all mankind to have dominion over the earth and all living things on the earth. Because of the fall, this dominion was forfeited over to the devil. This dominion was reclaimed through Jesus. Clearly, the devil isn’t going to give up what he thinks is his without a fight. This is why we need to take what is rightfully ours by force.

When you asked Jesus to be Lord and Savior, you became a new creature. This is a spiritual statement. It is our spirit that was created new. It is our spirit that is now sinless. We all still deal with the flesh. As a Christian we are much more than a new creation.

Rom 8:14 "For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God."

Rom 8:15 "For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, Abba! Father!"

Rom 8:16 "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,"

Rom 8:17 "and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him."

Clearly, we are children and joint heirs with Jesus. Jesus has all power in Heaven and on Earth (Matt. 28:18). In 1 John 3:8 we see that Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil. Being children of God and joint heirs with Jesus we are no longer servants but we are royalty. Although we will always serve our Lord in all we do we are still His children and as such we are here to serve man as Jesus did, and to fulfill the great commission—we are to make disciples of all the nations. Jesus was our example. We are to do the things He did. This is so important that it must be emphasized again. We are not servants, we are royalty. We are not on this earth to serve God. We are here to serve man as Jesus did. Because we are joint heirs with Jesus we also have all power in Heaven and on Earth through His name. When we say, “In Jesus name”, we are exercising a legal power of attorney and should expect (through faith) the same results as Jesus got.

Rights, Privileges, Responsibilities - Humanistic philosophies have become so prevalent in the church that we need to address these. The purpose of life is not to attain fame, fortune, or popularity. It is not to obtain riches or the “American dream”. It is not to provide a better life for you or your children.

The fruit of the Spirit and the prosperity of this world are rights however they are not to be our primary goal. These things are a natural consequence of our relationship with Jesus. Therefore we are not to pursue these things, but pursue Jesus. Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

  • The purpose of life is to know God. We are to know Him experientially and love Him with our entire being.
  • The purpose of life is to keep His commandments.
  • The purpose of life is to be conformed to the image of Christ (Rom. 8:29).

We are to enforce the victory that Jesus died to provide. Again, the devil is not one to give up easily, whether he has a legal right or not. We must take what is rightfully and legally ours by force. We are overwhelming victors through Jesus Christ who saved us.

Trying to make Heaven is based on works and is of the Old Testament. We live in the New Testament—a better and fulfilled covenant. Jesus died on the cross for us. He did a complete and perfect job. We are new creatures in Christ. This is an act of God that can not be undone. The fact that we will be in Heaven has already been established. Jesus said in John 6:39“And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.” And in 2 Timothy 2:19a, “Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.” Romans 11:31 says, “for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” Therefore, we should not be focusing our time and energy on things that are already established but be focused on our responsibilities to minister to the people around us. How are we to go and do the things that Jesus did?

Romans 12:2 says, "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

And in 1Corinthians 2:4–5,

1Cor 2:4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

1Cor 2:5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

The carnal mind conforms to the world. It is fleshy. It is not heavenly. For our minds to be renewed we must think the way God thinks. We are His children and we have the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16).

If then we have the mind of Christ, we should be thinking as God thinks. We must view things as looking from heaven to earth, not the other way around. To have a renewed mind we must develop the ability to recognize thoughts, feelings, and emotions that are of the world or of God. We are to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Cor. 10:5).

The gateway to a renewed mind is repentance of sin. Matthew 3:2 says, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Therefore, to experience the kingdom of heaven, repentance is required. The devil is a master of deception and lies. He has been around a lot, lot longer and any of us, and has gained a great deal of experience when dealing with people. Sin is often extremely subtle. It is therefore critically important that we always be watchful and attentive to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our helper. As such He is here to help us, guide us, and protect us. He gives us revelation into many things that we would otherwise miss. All of this provided we are obedient.

Many people think miracles and demonstrations of power are reserved for people with a special anointing. People think that miracles were performed by Jesus in His position as God, rather than as man. Neither of these assumptions is true. Jesus could not heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons, or do any of the many other miracles in and of Himself. In John 5:19 we read, "Then answered Jesus and said unto them, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise."
Jesus set His position as God aside to demonstrate what could be done by a man in right standing with God. He established Himself as an example for us to follow. We don’t have to be anything more than humans saved by the grace of God and walking with Him to do the works of God.

2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” Power, love, sound mind—these three all go together. In order to experience the power of God and have it flow through us, we must be filled with the love of God and have a sound mind. What is a sound mind? It is a mind free of sin because sin is insanity. It is a mind full of the righteousness of God. It is only when you have the love of God dwelling in you and a righteous and holy mind will the power of God flow out of you like rivers of living water to bring about the many miracles that Jesus did.

This brings us to the subject of faith, for John 6:29 says, “Jesus answered and said to them,"This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent."We gain faith by hearing and hearing by the word of God. We gain faith by working faith for faith without works is dead. We gain faith by understanding who we are as Christians and putting the Word of God into action. This is like going to the gym to get our physical bodies in shape. If you wish to become strong you need to get exercise. Exercise takes effort. It takes working the muscles so they become strong. Similarly, with faith we must work it so it will grow.

In conclusion, Jesus lived in constant conflict with those around Him that were carnally minded. Is your life in contradiction with those in the world? Do you see the way God sees? One who thinks and operates with a renewed mind destroys the works of the devil. It is a renewed mind that causes earthly reality to match heavenly reality. A renewed mind proves the Word of God by deed and not just word. A renewed mind experiences what it means to be a normal Christian.

In Joshua 3:13–17, the priests, as commanded by God, stepped into the Jordan, the river stopped flowing, and Israel crossed the Jordan. How many of us today are standing on the bank of the Jordan afraid or unwilling to get our feet wet? And what does the analogy of “getting our feet wet mean?
To get one’s feet wet means to step out in faith. It is an act of faith and an act of surrender.

Are you going to just stand on the bank of the Jordan waiting for something to happen or are you going to take action and get your feet wet?

Joshua 1:9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
